? this will not be the first time the bridge has been shutdown intentionally over a holiday weekend. cal-trans likes to close the bridge on holidays because there are fewer cars trying to cross over it. kron 4's charles clifford is live for us on treasure island with more on that. charles? over labor day 2006, the eastbound lanes of the bridge were closed so crews could demolish portions of the old roadway in san francsico. one year later, the entire bridge was shutdown over labor day so caltrans could move a 200 foot section of roadway into place just east of yerba buena island. in 2009, there was another full closure over labor day as caltrans finished work on the s-curve detour along the eastern span. then in 2011, the eastbound lanes were closed over memorial day weekend so those lanes could be re- aligned near the toll plaza. the last major planned closure of the bridge was over president's day weekend in 2012 when the west bound lanes were realigned to make room for work on the new span. tonight police in walnut creek need your help in catching the four people who burglarized the tiffany's store downto

area toll authority, caltrans, and the state transportation commission. the governor has already thrown his support behind the labor day opening after a federal report and a series of independent reviews deemed the new eastern span safe enough to open with a temporary fix of 32 busted bolts. now it will be a mad dash to pull the opening off. crews are expected to shut the bridge down for five full days as they scramble to pave it and paint it. there is demolition work still to be done. caltrans has told us their crews are up for it. >> in a sick kind of way, people thrive on being stressed to do a great job and the challenges of doing it are actually exciting. >> reporter: we've learned there will be a modest ceremony celebrating the opening of the bridge. but nothing like the fanfare previously planned, the bike ride, the marathon. down the road, we may see a larger public ceremony to celebrate this. >> hard to believe, 24 years. the old one, it's going to take a while to get it down. >> reporter: crews are going to have to dismantle it in reverse. that could take 5-7 years, we're told

they will be driving straight where i'm standing on to the new bridge, and caltrans officials invite ode us up on to the bridge today to show us what they have left to do. they also want this to serve as a reminder for everyone that a closure is comping, and that's when the new bridge -- after that the new bridge will open. coming out of the toll plaza is where one of the biggest jobs will take place. they have 0 grind a new path for drivers. one of the many chores left to do and i asked the staff about the mood of the staff. >> i would say there's energy but everyone is very confident this work is go to be getting done. this is important, critical work, to connect the bridge. but we have done much more complicated work during past closures. reporter: here's a list of what is left to do. striping so you can see the lanes. painting on the actual bridge and on the rails. electrical work, including connecting the lights and testing them. erect a barrier, the rail in some places, and some road work to do like putting hinges in place. sounds like a lot. they say this isn't tough work but takes time

just six days away from the bay bridge closure. and caltrans has released a his new animation that will show you exactly what your drive will look like going over the new span. and a warning from police this morning. thieves are posing as p-g-and-e workers in order to get into your home. we'll tell you what to look out for. good morning everyone and thanks for joining us on this thursday august 22nd. i'm james fletcher. topping our news this morning. the wildfire burning near yosemite continues to threaten 25-hundred homes. the "rim fire" is essentially burning out of control. firefighters have only been able to contain about five- percent of it. so far, it has burned more than 25-square miles in the stanislaus national forest. the area is fairly remote, but it has led to the evacuation of thousands of people from campgrounds and private homes. the bay area is just six days away from the shutdown of the bay bridge. all lanes in both directions will close at 8:00- pm on wednesday night, august 28th. that's when workers will transition the old roadway to the new eastern span. th

of caltrans and executive director of the bay area transportation authority and the head of the transportation commission to actually take a public vote that will happen at 10 a.m. and again that will be a formality at this point. they will officially approve a labor day opening. there will be a modest ceremony of sorts nowhere near the big grand opening party that's been planned earlier this year in order to open the bridge on labor day. instead it will be something modest but there may be discussions to have a larger ceremony at some point something that is open to the public and will be sort of a large-scale celebration of the opening of the bridge. any other details about that celebration will come in that meeting tomorrow but again we want to stress we have learned from some very well placed sources within the state transportation authority that the bridge will open on labor day. it has yet to be officially approved by that three-person panel but that's expected to happen tomorrow at 10 a.m. allen? >> it seems like the scale really tipped when the federal government signed off on this tem
